Walk through any shilajit listing online and you will see a number attached to almost every product. One brand says 20 percent fulvic acid. The next says 60. A third claims 80 and puts it in the product name. If you assume the biggest number wins, you would pick the last one. That instinct is wrong, and the reason why is one of the more useful things you can learn before you buy.
The fulvic acid percentage shilajit brands print on a label is not a single agreed measurement. It depends on which laboratory method produced it. Two identical jars of resin can honestly be labelled 18 percent and 65 percent, and neither company has technically lied. So let's unpack what the number is, why it swings so wildly, and what a believable figure looks like.
What fulvic acid actually is
Shilajit is not a plant and it is not a mineral. It is the compressed remains of plant matter that broke down slowly in rock over a very long time. What comes out of that process is a family of compounds called humic substances. Fulvic acid is one fraction of that family, defined by how it behaves in a lab rather than by a single chemical formula. It stays dissolved in acid where its cousin, humic acid, drops out of solution.
That definition matters more than it sounds. Fulvic acid is a category, not a molecule. There is no single pure standard you can weigh a sample against, which is exactly why measuring it is so contested. Why the fulvic acid percentage varies so much
Here is the crux of it. There are two broad families of test, and they do not measure the same thing.
- Colorimetric tests. Cheap, fast, and widely used. A reagent is added, the sample changes colour, and the intensity of that colour is read as a concentration. The problem is that plenty of compounds in shilajit react with the same reagent. Total phenolics get swept up and counted as fulvic acid. This is how you end up with results of 60, 70 or 80 percent.
- Separation methods. Slower and considerably more expensive. The sample is extracted with a strong base, acidified so the humic acids clump out, and the remaining fraction is passed through a resin that adsorbs the genuine hydrophobic fulvic acids and leaves everything else behind. ISO 19822:2018 is the published international standard for this approach. What you get at the end is a much narrower, much more defensible number.
You can see why the industry drifted toward the first option. It is cheaper, and it produces a figure that looks better on a label. But a claim of 80 percent fulvic acid should make you pause rather than reach for your wallet. Shilajit is a complex natural material containing minerals, humic acid, dibenzo alpha pyrones and plenty else. If four fifths of it were fulvic acid, it would not really be shilajit anymore.
So what is a believable number?
When shilajit is tested with a separation method aligned to the international standard, genuine purified Himalayan resin generally lands somewhere in the region of 10 to 25 percent fulvic acid. Ranges do differ by source altitude, by season and by how the raw material was purified, so treat that as a sensible band rather than a hard rule.
The practical takeaway is that the number on its own tells you very little. What tells you something is the method printed next to it. A COA that names the test, names the accredited laboratory that ran it and gives a date is worth more than a bigger percentage with no context at all. If a brand will not say how the figure was produced, that silence is your answer.

What does fulvic acid actually do?
Now the part most articles overstate. Fulvic acid is genuinely interesting, and the research on it is genuinely early. Both things are true.
The mechanism with the most support is chelation. Fulvic acid molecules are small and they bind loosely to mineral ions, which appears to help keep those minerals in a soluble, absorbable state rather than letting them precipitate out. Iron is the most studied example. There is also a growing body of work on how humic substances interact with gut bacteria, though much of that is still in cell cultures and animal models rather than people.
What we would not tell you is that fulvic acid detoxifies you, fixes your energy or repairs your mitochondria. Those claims get repeated a lot online and the human evidence behind them is thin. Large, well designed human trials on isolated fulvic acid are still in short supply, and honest brands should say so rather than borrow authority from studies that were run in a petri dish.
How to read a shilajit COA without a chemistry degree
You do not need to understand the analytical detail. You need four things:
- A named laboratory, ideally accredited to ISO 17025, not just the words lab tested.
- A named method for the fulvic acid figure. If it says ISO 19822 or a comparable separation method, the number means something. If it says colorimetric or nothing at all, adjust your expectations of the percentage downward.
- Heavy metals results, with actual values rather than a pass stamp. This matters more than fulvic acid does, honestly, because shilajit comes out of rock and rock contains what it contains.
- A recent date and a batch reference you can match to the jar in your hand.
That is a better buying checklist than any percentage on a front label will ever be.
The short version
Treat a high fulvic acid percentage as a question, not a credential. Ask which method produced it. A modest number backed by a named separation method and a published certificate is a far stronger signal of quality than a spectacular one backed by nothing.
