Shilajit Benefits for Men: Energy, Testosterone & Recovery

An honest look at shilajit benefits for men. What the clinical research actually found on testosterone, energy and recovery, and what it did not find.

A dark green Salxir card with the words Evidence not hype above the heading Shilajit for men

Search for shilajit benefits for men and you'll hit a wall of testosterone talk. Some of it is fair. A lot of it is not. So here's the version we'd give a friend: what the human research actually measured, where the numbers are smaller than the headlines, and what a reasonable person should expect from a daily pea sized amount of resin.

Shilajit is a mineral rich substance that seeps out of high altitude rock over centuries. If you want the full background, we wrote a plain English explainer on what shilajit is. This piece is narrower. It's about men, and it's about evidence.

Shilajit and testosterone: the study everyone cites

Almost every claim you'll read traces back to one paper. Pandit and colleagues published a randomised, double blind, placebo controlled trial in Andrologia in 2016. Seventy five healthy men aged 45 to 55 took either 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day or a placebo, for 90 days. The shilajit group saw a statistically significant rise in total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS compared with placebo.

That's a real result from a properly designed trial, and it's worth knowing. But read the fine print with us. It's one study. The men were middle aged, which is the group whose levels tend to drift downward anyway, so the finding may not transfer to a healthy 25 year old. Ninety days is not long. And a percentage rise on a lab report is not the same thing as a noticeable change in how you feel.

Our honest position: shilajit is not a testosterone booster in the way that phrase is usually sold. It's a traditional mineral supplement with one encouraging trial behind it in one age group. If your energy or libido has genuinely dropped off, get your bloods done. That's a job for a doctor, not a jar.

Energy and physical recovery

This is where the evidence gets more interesting to us, and where most men actually notice something.

A 2019 study looked at 500 mg of shilajit daily over eight weeks in healthy active men, measuring how well muscle strength held up under repeated fatigue. The shilajit group retained more strength across the fatigue protocol than placebo. Separate work has looked at fulvic acid, one of shilajit's main active fractions, and its behaviour around mitochondria, the parts of your cells that turn food into usable energy. The mechanism is plausible. It is also not fully mapped, and we won't pretend otherwise.

What this means practically: if you train, lift, cycle or work a physical job, the recovery and fatigue angle is a more grounded reason to try shilajit than the hormone angle. We wrote more on the timeline in how long shilajit takes to work, and on amounts in our dosage guide.

Fertility and sperm quality

There's a 2010 study on men with low sperm count that reported improvements in sperm parameters after 90 days of processed shilajit. It gets quoted constantly. It also had 28 participants, no placebo group, and industry funding. That's not a reason to dismiss it, but it is a reason to treat it as a signal worth following up rather than a proven benefit.

If you and your partner are trying to conceive, please talk to a doctor rather than reaching for a supplement first. Male fertility has a lot of moving parts, and most of the useful ones are not sold in jars.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Men who tend to get the most out of shilajit, in our experience of talking to customers: those over 35, those with physically demanding routines, and those who take it consistently for eight weeks or more rather than sporadically. Consistency matters far more than dose here.

That last point is the one we care most about. Raw shilajit from a mountainside is not food. It has to be purified and it has to be tested, and you should be able to see the test.

How we approach this at Salxir

We're a Finnish company, and Finland's food authority inspects us under the Oiva system. Our facility is FDA registered. Every batch is third party lab tested and we publish the certificates rather than describing them, because a claim you can't check isn't worth much.

If you want to try it, the simplest starting points are our shilajit tablets if you'd rather not deal with sticky resin and measuring, or shilajit honey sticks if taste is the thing that has put you off before. Both are easy to keep up daily, which is really the whole game. You can see the full range in the shop.

Start low, give it two months, and judge it on how you actually feel rather than on what a label promised.
